Design Processes and Techniques

2024 Semester A

ARCH 20004

This subject focuses on contemporary design-enabling approaches and techniques. Through a set of exercises focused on diagramming, computing, and prototyping design precedents.

Assignment 1 required me to analyse various aspects of a given architectural design precedent through mapping, modelling and diagramming exercises.

Assignment 2 required me to reinterpret the design and shape of the given case study through a parametric model and a set of design variables I identified in the previous massing diagram. After generating three parametric massing variations, select one to design three parametric Second Skin. Then, perform a Solar Analysis to test the performance of two selected parametric second skin design variations.

Assignment 3 consolidated the work from the previous two assignments. Based on the most suitable ‘second skin’ design from Assignment 2, build a digital prototype and subdivide the second skin geometry into buildable elements to be fabricated in the FabLab/NextLab through laser cutting and 3D printing. Then, document the design, fabrication and assembly processes (digital to physical) and produce two high-quality digital renders of the optimised building system.
